Summer program on an archaeological dig

150x150 images: parthenon1.jpgThe Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) is offering a unique opportunity for two Harvard undergraduates to spend five weeks working on an archaeological excavation in Greece. The site of Kenchreai is an ancient burial ground located in the eastern harbor of Ancient Corinth. Harvard students will join an international and interdisciplinary team of professors, students, and scientists excavating and conducting research on the excavation’s finds. During the course of the excavation season, students will gain hands-on experience on the excavation, identification, and preservation of ancient artifacts.

Students will live and work full-time on the site of Kenchraei. The excavation is organized and managed by Macalester College. The Center for Hellenic Studies will arrange housing, cover all of successful candidates’ expenses while in Greece and assist them in securing additional funding to offset the cost of international travel. The CHS will also organize some special activities for students at its new facility in Nafplion, Greece.

Tentative dates for the program are May 29th through July 11 (subject to confirmation).

Application deadline is March 1. An application will consist of a resumé, a 600-800 word personal statement detailing the student’s intellectual and professional interests, why the student wishes to spend time in at an archaeological dig in Greece, and what the student hopes to gain from the experience and one letter of recommendation.
